Our tour guide from Egywonders will meet you at Borg El Arab Airport to begin the Alexandria Layover Tour. We will start by visiting the library of Alexandria, which is the largest library globally, containing 8 million books. In the library’s open court, you can observe the statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy the First, the latter of which was discovered nearby underwater.
During your visit, you will have the opportunity to explore the reading hall inside the library as well as the Saadat Museum and the Alexandria Museum, where you can enjoy their intriguing exhibits and displays.
Come and explore the Roman Amphitheater of Alexandria, where you can witness the exhibition of the submerged monuments of Alexandria that were uncovered beneath the East Harbor of the city. Once you are in the car, it will transport you to the renowned St. Mark’s Church, which holds the distinction of being the oldest church on the African continent. Following this visit, you will have the opportunity to explore the historic downtown area of Alexandria, where you can stroll through the ancient city center. Take a closer look at the traditional markets, where you will find a diverse array of goods for sale, including delightful Egyptian sweets and snacks. In this area, you will notice architectural influences from the baroque style as well as Italian and French styles, adding to the charm of the surroundings.
Explore El Nabi Daniel Mosque, a site that is widely believed to have connections to the tomb of Alexander the Great. This mosque is said to hold the remains of the esteemed scholar Prophet Daniel and his companion Sidi Lokman el Hakim, a respected religious storyteller. You have the choice to make a lunch stop at either a contemporary Fish Restaurant or a renowned and traditional eatery in Alexandria known as Mohamed Ahmed’s.
Keep exploring your Alexandria Layover Tour by moving through the ancient market district of Mansheya, where you can witness the presence of traditional women’s markets (known as zan’et etsetat). These markets are characterized by their extremely small and tight streets. Furthermore, this area also houses a gold market, where individuals commonly purchase their wedding and engagement jewelry.
Afterward, the vehicle will transport you to the most beautiful and largest mosque in the city, known as the Abbo Elabbas Mosque. Adjacent to it, you will witness a peculiar sight: an ancient amusement park where youngsters enjoy riding old-fashioned attractions and indulging in cotton candy.
On the other side, you will find the corniche and the historic harbor, where one can observe old fishing boats, fishermen in action, and traditional seafarers crafting nets. The pictures captured in this area are truly breathtaking. Additionally, you can explore the exterior of Quaitbay Castle, constructed on the very spot where the remarkable Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. This magnificent fortress presents a fantastic opportunity for memorable photographs.
Afterwards, the car will transport you to the Montaza Gardens. During the Alexandria Layover Tour, you have the opportunity to make a brief two-minute stop at the King of Mango to grab a drink from Alexandria’s drive-thru and enjoy freshly squeezed juices. Additionally, you can also take a photo at the memorial to the Unknown Soldier of Alexandria.
On the way to Montaza Palace and Gardens, which is approximately 25 km away, you can enjoy the stunning coastline and panoramic views of the city.
