In the morning, you will be taken from your hotel in Cairo to visit the Monastery of Saint Simon, which is also known as the Cave Church of Zabbaleen. This monastery is situated in the Mokattam Mountains, and to reach there, we will have a quick drive through an area called “Garbage City.” This region is home to a significant number of garbage collectors, also known as Zabbaleen. Many churches have been constructed within the caves that are found in the Mokattam Mountains. Our first stops will be Saint Simon the Tanner Hall and St. Mark’s Church.
In 1974, a massive cave was discovered that was filled with countless tons of stones, reaching all the way up to the cave’s ceiling, which stands at a height of 17 meters from the ground. Later, this cave was transformed into a two-story structure. The upper level, known as St. Simon the Tanner Hall, has the capacity to accommodate 2000 people for spiritual gatherings. The walls of this hall are adorned with stunning rock engravings depicting various scenes from the Bible. On the other hand, the lower level, named St. Mark’s Church, pays tribute to St. Mark, who was the first preacher in Egypt’s history. Next, we proceed to the Virgin Mary and St. Simon the Tanner Cathedrals. This massive church, designed in the shape of a quarter circle, was built to hold several thousand individuals and is the largest within the monastery. Following the guided tour, you will be transported back to your hotel.
